Where should you place your logo?
It's not all about having a superb logo designed by a graphic designer, you now need to know where to position it on your website!
On this subject, several schools exist to answer this question: there are supporters of a positioning at the top right, at the top center and at the top left.
After briefly recalling the role played by the logo on your website, we will tell you the ideal location for it!
What is a logo used for on a website?
Before knowing where to place your logo on your website, it is good to remember what it will be used for.
According to work carried out by the Nielsen Norman Group (NNGroup), a famous user interface and user experience consulting firm , the logo has three major interests:
- Remind the Internet user which site they are on
- Facilitate navigation to the home page, clicking on the logo allowing you to go to the latter more and more often
- Ensure a presence for the brand or company on all pages of the site
It now remains to be seen where it should be placed to best fulfill these objectives.
What is the right location for a logo on a website?
In order to define the place where it is best to place your logo, we will once again base ourselves on the work of the Nielsen Norman Group as they are a reference in the world of web design.
They were mainly interested in three locations which they took care to analyze.
1. A logo placed at the top right: a bad choice for brand recognition
It is normally natural for a French Internet user to place their gaze on the left of a web page rather than on the right, for the simple reason that we read from left to right.
Also, the NNGroup conducted a study with a panel of Internet users to see if this feeling could be verified. Like an A/B test, they were presented with the same website with a logo located at the top left or a logo located at the top right.
Well, the panel identified the brand more easily when the logo was located at the top left. Very precisely, the brand recognition rate reached 39% when it was located at the top left and only 21% when it was placed at the top right.
A logo located at the top right will therefore not benefit from optimal visibility and the brand will be poorly remembered by the Internet user.
Please note: It is good to note that some situations may justify a logo placed at the top right. This is for example the case of a site written in Arabic or Hebrew, these languages being read from right to left. Internet users accustomed to browsing sites written in these languages are in fact accustomed to taking their first look to the right. It is then appropriate to place the logo on that side.
2. A logo placed at the top center: more complex navigation to the home page
If the logo located at the top right has clearly shown its limits, it is time to see how a logo placed at the top center is perceived.
First, you should know that in terms of brand recognition, the results are similar between a logo placed at the top center or at the top left. NNGroup researchers therefore conducted a complementary study on navigation to the home page.
It turns out that with a centrally placed logo, 76% of Internet users were able to go to the home page in one click. With a logo placed on the left, this same rate reached 96%.
In other words, placing a logo at the top center can disturb some Internet users in their navigation on your site.
3. A logo placed at the top left: ideal?
Well yes, positioning your logo at the top left of your web pages should allow you to optimize the recognition of your brand (or company) and navigation to your home page.
This is obviously closely linked to the browsing habits of Internet users, all of whom are used to looking to the left of the pages first.
Our tip
As soon as you have a logo capable of making an impression and reflecting the image of your brand or your company, you can position it at the top left of your website.
It's now up to you to generate traffic to it so that your logo – but also your products and services – is known to as many people as possible.
